I strongly recommend taking the time and listening to this interview with Jared Kushner - a person who led the most historical peace accords in the Middle East. My key takes: 1. The moderate Muslim countries want peace and prosperity for their citizens. 2. ~$40B were invested in the Palestinians with no outcomes. The reasons are the deep corruption of the Palestinian Authiruty, the Hamas and the UN agencies like UNRAW. KPIs should be defined and outcomes should be measured. 3. Business people in the Gulf Area would gladly rebuild Gaza and the West Bank at a cost of ~$7B. What stops them is the lack of property rights under the Palestinian Authority and Hamas. Just wanting peace is not enough. We should all be committed to doing what it takes. #freegazafromhamas is the only way to create a better future for both Israel and the Palestinians. https://lnkd.in/d46XhWTm

If you’re interested in the history of Russian-Ukrainian war which is happening right now, you will appreciate this podcast. In the last episode everything is about the role of history, past and present. “The finale of our history of the Ukraine war – for now. As Ukraine’s 2023 counter-offensive begins and Putin responds with mere nihilistic destruction, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Now Arthur Snell takes stock of the war so far. Ukraine’s fight for freedom could preserves the security of Europe’s hinterlands, and Russia’s failures have shown how NOT to fight a war. But history tells us that the fall of great powers puts global peace in grave peril. How can we prevent chaos in Russia spilling out across Europe and perhaps beyond? Arthur speaks to: • Serhii Plokhy, Prof of Ukrainian History at Harvard and the Author of ‘The Russo-Ukrainian War’ • Luke Harding, journalist and author of Orwell-prize shortlisted ‘Invasion’ • Iuliia Osmalenko, former Ukrainian diplomat and Head of Globsec Kyiv Office • Dr Mike Martin, military analyst and author of ‘How to Fight A War’ • Oleskii Plotnikov, serving Ukrainian soldier and human rights lawyer” And it’s featuring Julia Musakovska’s beautiful poem on the role of language and words. https://lnkd.in/d2m6PQQB

From Fighting and Defeating Russians to Joining NATO Why Charles XII is unmentionable This podcast episode is about Sweden's journey from the Vikings to nationhood, from the Swedish Empire that made the Baltic Sea a Swedish sea to the rise of the Russian Empire, and then to nuclear Sweden and NATO. And yes, we'll chat about ABBA too. Listen to this podcast: https://bit.ly/HbN-S3E33 Sweden's spectacular victories against Russia were later reversed by crushing losses to Russia that ended Sweden's Empire. Sweden is joining NATO. But why now? Why after more than two centuries of peace - a record longer than any other country! My guest in this episode, Dr. Ulf Zander who joined our conversation from Sweden, answers this question and much more. He explained the history of Sweden from the age of the Vikings. And no, not all Vikings are the same. Those from Sweden ventured east, and they may have given Russia its name. But the legacy of Vikings endured - traders or fearsome warriors? The answer mattered in 20th-century geopolitics. Dr. Zander describes how Sweden became a nation and how it rose to the status of an empire, despite its much smaller population than its neighbors. Here our conversation takes a turn as we talk about the fall of the Swedish empire and the rise of the Russian empire. We talk about Charles XII, a king who Voltaire portrayed as a tragic hero, and whose legacy in the 20th century was used to goad Sweden into war against Russia in WWI and WWII. We also talk about Sweden's massive emigration to the United States. How massive? More than 1 million. To put this in perspective, the population of Sweden now is little more than 10 million! But the story doesn't end there. Immigration into Sweden has also been massive. How massive? More than 15% of Sweden's population is foreign-born. That percentage is even higher than the U.S. and the U.K. Dr. Zander explains the challenges of Sweden's large immigration communities, including gang violence, particularly those that haven't assimilated. A Professor of History at the Department of History, in Lund University in Sweden, Professor Zander's main interest is how history is communicated and used. He has published on the debates and uses of Swedish history from the late 19th century to the early 21st century as well as on monuments, film, history, and identity and uses of history in the United States. He is currently working on several research projects. The one that we discuss in this episode is that he is writing a book together with historian and film historian Tommy Gustafsson about the Swedish warrior king Charles XII in Swedish cinema. To learn more about Prof. Zander and his publications and other projects, you can visit his academic homepage: https://lnkd.in/dddmvGYu I hope you enjoy this episode. ALEXANDER GABUEV, HANNA NOTTE NOVEMBER 09, 2023 Carnegie Politika podcast host Alex Gabuev is joined by Dr. Hanna Notte, director of the Eurasia Nonproliferation Program at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies and a senior non-resident scholar at CSIS, to discuss Russia's position on the conflict in the Middle East. It's been more than a month since Hamas attacked Israel, reigniting the Middle East crisis once again and switching the focus of other political players to the region. Is Russia benefiting from the escalation in the conflict? How is it affecting the war in Ukraine? And what are the long-term consequences for Russia's position as a global player in the Middle East?

Unlike most people, I see the U.S. strikes in Yemen as content fodder for my podcast. Today it's the U.S. and Israel, but the problem in that region goes back 2,000 years. Most people don't know anything about the Houthis, and they probably have never heard of the Axumite empire. At the height of the Roman empire, there was a good deal of trade coming from India and China to the Mediterranean, just like today. The Axumites were based in modern-day northern Ethiopia and Eritrea and they controlled both sides of the Red Sea where it connects with the Indian Ocean. These 2 factors contributed to its rise and hegemony. Their ability to maintain order on the seas made them an important partner with the Romans. As the Roman empire faded away, so did the Axumites. Today, that region continues to be an important choke point in the international sea lane system. It's no wonder that a coalition of multiple nations is attacking the Yemeni gov't to protect global shipping. Who says history is boring?
